Laboratory Manager - 1st Shift

Summary:

Manage day to day Lab Operations in a fast paced Food and Dietary Supplement manufacturing facility. Manage documentation, technical, and non-technical procedures required to process, submit and test Lab samples within expected time frames. Assign specific computer generated identification numbers, check for accuracy, and record items processed. Forward accessioned samples to designated laboratory location(s); reviewing and correcting any discrepancies and managing on time results. Manage Lab procedures and location of stored specimens. Mange Chemical program and Waste Disposal. Support Customer and Technical Services Science based inquiries as needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage Chemical, Sensory and Microbiological Laboratory personnel includes hiring, scheduling, training, counseling and terminations.
  • Provides clear and concise responses to internal and Customer based inquiries.
  • Serves as contact for subcontracted labs.
  • Ensures adequate safety records, audits and training are in place.
  • Manage Lab functions in accordance to cGLPs, 21 CFR Part 111 and FSMA
  • Update Safety plan and chemical hygiene manuals.
  • Research new products and services
  • Manage chemical and consumable supply vendors
  • Manage Chemical and Waste disposal
  • Manage Lab specimens
  • Procure new Lab equipment
  • Attend Operations and Technical Service meetings and trainings as required.
  • Assists Lab staff in any area as needed; this includes sample preparation and analysis.
  • Monitors and improves Laboratory efficiency through performance metrics.
  • Keeps up to date with technical developments, especially those which can increase efficiency and improve robustness and reliable test results
  • Able to search through USP, AOAC and other relevant reference books
  • Achieve ISO certification

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. 
  • Work well with others and contribute to a positive environment.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Internet Explorer and Contact Manager.
  • Be able to work a flexible schedule including daily overtime and weekends.

Education/Experience:

  • Master Degree (M.S.) from four-year college or university with 24 hours in chemistry or related field
  • Two to four years related experience and/or training in analytical chemistry with an emphasis in the following:
    LC
    - ICP
    FTIR
    Pyrolysis 
    Microbiological Methods
  • Completion of Chemical Hygiene/Hazcom Safety Training.

 Financial Responsibilities:

Produces laboratory invoices based on services rendered.
Publishes testing costs and turn-around times for each test offered.

Reporting Relationships:

The Laboratory Manager will report directly to the Sr. Quality Director.
